Twilight of Impunity: The War Crimes Trial of Slobodan Milosevic

In Twilight of Impunity Armatta brings the dramatic proceedings to life, explains complex legal issues, and assesses the trial’s implications for victims of the conflicts in the Balkans during the 1990s and international justice more broadly. Armatta acknowledges the trial’s flaws, particularly Milosevic’s grandstanding and attacks on the institutional legitimacy of the International Criminal Tribunal.

Yet she argues that the trial provided an indispensable legal and historical narrative of events in the former Yugoslavia and a valuable forum for victims to tell their stories and seek justice. It addressed crucial legal issues, such as commanders’ responsibility for crimes committed by subordinates, and it helped to create a framework for conceptualizing and organizing other large-scale international criminal tribunals. The prosecution of Slobodan Milosevic in The Hague was an important step toward ending impunity for leaders who perpetrate egregious crimes against humanity.

Twilight of Impunity: the War Crimes Trial of Slobodan Milosevic,

Judith Armatta is a lawyer, journalist, and human-rights advocate who monitored the trial of Slobodan Milosevic on behalf of the Coalition for International Justice. Her dispatches from The Hague appeared in national and international newspapers. Joining efforts to promote the rule of law, Armatta worked for the American Bar Association’s Central and East European Law Initiative, opening offices in Belgrade, Serbia (in 1997) and Montenegro (in 1999). In this role she collaborated with women lawyers in the former Yugoslavia and supported the work of an independent judiciary. During the Kosova War, she headed a War Crimes Documentation Project among Kosovar Albanian refugees in Macedonia. Finally, Armatta assisted the Justice Ministry of Montenegro on sweeping law reform. 
For over two decades, she has worked to increase awareness of and response to violence against women and children—in her home state of Oregon, as well as at the national and international level. Celebrated for her efforts in Oregon, she moved into International Law and Justice in the late 1990's.
Armatta currently consults on international humanitarian, human rights, and other rule-of-law issues, most recently in the Middle East.

Armatta’s book, Twilight of Impunity: the War Crimes Trial of Slobodan Milosevic, will be released in August 2010 by Duke University Press. An eyewitness account of the first major international war-crimes tribunal since the Nuremberg trials, Twilight of Impunity is a gripping guide to the prosecution of Slobodan Milosevic for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Sara had always dreamed of escaping Missouri and the hard homesteaders’ life

had to leave or risk losing the respect of her parents and becoming the center of idle gossip among her neighbors.   Sara knew that time would not hide her shameful secret much longer.  Jake, her beau, promised he would send for her promptly, but three months had gone by and Sara had not even received a note confirming his safe arrival in California.  If only she hadn’t believed everything Jake had whispered in her ear that summer night.  If only her dreams of leaving
such a harsh life hadn’t blinded her from seeing Jake as he really was…
Now, waiting in the rain for the wagon train, she blocked the “if only” thoughts from her mind.  She put on her best smile and made up mind she was going to find Jake, marry and be happy.  Little did she know that her well laid plans were about to take an unexpected turn when the ruggedly handsome wagon master, Pete McCain, took off his wide brimmed cowboy hat and smiled.

The Circle of the Radiant Heart

After a summer break "The Circle of the Radiant Heart" begins its Fall Season of gatherings and class offerings. The Circle Community is dedicated to assisting fellow truth seekers on the Ascension Path. Our spiritual foundation is based upon the Ascended Masters teachings. At our weekly gatherings we network with one another for mutual support, meditate and celebrate our connection to God. 
We begin our fall season in the Riverside Room of the Taprock Resturant between the bridges in Grants Pass at 10:00 am Sunday starting September 12th. Following our next two meetings on the 19th and 26th at Taprock, we look forward to our return to Aquarius Books and Gifts in October.
